Sometimes when I go shopping for some new threads for the Boy Wonder I hear myself having a silent tirade in my head. Why? Well I just can’t understand why clothes buyers and designers find it so difficult to use other colours than blue for boys and pink for girls. And don’t get me started on the cutesy slogans and prints! I personally think little boys look fabulous in purples and reds and oranges. And little girls can look divine in blues and greens and even some shades of brown.

This stripy fleece is one of about three items of clothing that I have ever chosen to buy that is blue. The combination of the cyan and white looks pretty good, gallic almost.

But this doesn’t mean the tirades will cease…seriously all you clothes designers out there, the blue and pink thing has to stop!

Shopping for pajamas is not a task to be taken lightly because it’s not always easy finding the perfect combination of fabric, cut and fit. I can spend hours trawling around shops on the High Street or surfing the web to find gear for slumber that is just so. The fabric should be soft to the touch and the trousers should be loose fitting and comfortable for the tossing and turning that comes with a visit to the Land of Nod.

In our house we’re pretty partial to comfy, cosy loungewear and we all like a good snuggle on the sofa whilst watching a Pixar film or Cbeebies. As soon as I get home from work I find it pretty darn difficult not to rush upstairs and change into my PJs straight away, and my husband loves his house pants (although he has a lot more restraint than me and tends to reserve them for bedtime!). No surprise then that recently Rohan has been showing some attachment issues when it comes to getting him out of his PJs and dressed for the day, like mother, like son eh?

It’s Star Wars day today. Jedi enthusiasts across the globe will be making every effort to utter the phrase ‘May the fourth be with you’ and I have to tell you that this will include me and my husband, Rob. We are big Star Wars fans. When I was pregnant with Rohan we decided not to find out the sex so we referred to my bump as Boba Fett. Rob is such a big fan he owns every special edition of every film and when we bought an HD ready flat screen TV a few years ago, the first thing he did was dig out Star Wars IV; A new hope. We can’t wait to sit down with Rohan when he’s a bit older and watch the Star Wars films.

For me, Star Wars reminds me of growing up with my big brothers, I worshipped them and wanted to be just like them and if they were into Star Wars then so was I. Being a die hard tom boy I loved the ballsiness of Princess Leia, thought Han Solo was a hunk, wanted to squish Yoda and as for Chewie, don’t get me started…who wouldn’t want Chewie for a sidekick?

Sometimes I see an item of clothing in the sale and even though I know it will be a year or two before it will fit Rohan I just can’t help myself so I buy it and keep it for when he’s big enough. This tee was one of those. I bought it last summer and I love the hippyish mottled dyed effect background, and of course the original Star Wars illustrations are out of this world.

I have to admit that like every mummy I often buy clothes for Rohan that I wish I could wear myself. This Run DMC tee is one of those. As a teenager my taste in music was heavily influenced by whatever my big brothers were listening to at the time, and seeing Rohan in this tee remind me of singing You be illin’ with my brother Bhu, chuckling and rapping away.

One day I hope Rohan sees this photo and asks me who Run DMC are, then I can dig out the CD and introduce him to old school rap. But perhaps I’ll keep the New Kids on the Block CDs hidden away.

I got my first pair of Chuck Taylors when I was 11. Oh how I loved my shiny, lovely red Chucks. They were so comfortable and I wore them pretty much every day until they had so many holes in them I had to give them up. I’ve had 3 pairs since (my current ones are taupe with purple trim and laces – lush!) and my husband is a massive fan too and wore a plum pair at our wedding.

So imagine my delight when a good friend sent these cyan beauties for Rohan. Her daughter had outgrown them but they still had plenty of life in them. Rohan loves running about in them. He loves running about fullstop but to me he seems so much more comfortable in his Chucks than in any of his other shoes. This is definitely the beginning of a family footwear tradition.
